Write a Letter

Say What You Think!

Tell
the world what's on your mind. The letters-to-the-editor section of the
paper is one of the most read sections, and elected officials always read letters. It's pretty easy to get a letter in most papers--a little harder to get one in the Oregonian.
So, tell people in your community what you think. Point out a problem,
highlight a good or bad vote by your legislator, or describe something
good.

Here's is a publication list of Oregon's daily
newspapers. Click on the one in your community for information on how
to send a letter-to-the-editor. (Are we missing one? Send the info to webmaster@dpo.org.)

Tips

  • Make your letter local. Relate the topic to something that happened in your community. Include personal examples.
  • Keep it short.
Most papers accept letters up to 250 words, but 150 is better. If you
can say it in one witty sentence, your odds of getting published are
    even better.
  • Relate it to current news. Papers aren't interested in yesterday's news. Relate your letter to a recent event, news story, or editorial.
  • Keep your focus. Limit your letter to one or two points, and put the most important point in the first paragraph.
  • Include your name, address, and telephone number. Most papers will check with you before printing the letter to make sure you're who you say you are.
  • Keep writing. If you don't get your first letter published, don't get discouraged. Send in another one.
